Making erotic Games

Some time ago I wrote the first article on the Art of Love that answers some questions, from our visitors, about the erotic art on the Art of love. Today I want to answer the next series of questions mainly about developing Adult Games. As you can imagine I can not answer them all. Most of the questions are around the topic that is best described as the inspiration in designing adult games. The second one is the discussion around the theme ‘sex in games’. This one was even in the Washington Post ( United States ) where we were contacted to talk about this topic in relation with our adult game Lovechess.

The images in the gallery are some unfinished adult game characters we are currently working on. They are now in the texturing process but I am not allowed to tell more about the projects yet ;-)

Designing an adult game

Well the first question that comes in mind is if there is any difference in developing ‘normal’ games and an adult game. Well yes and no. They both start out of an idea, most of the time a lot of ideas, and they have to be shaped into one game concept. That’s the easy answer. But especially when it comes to sex in games you have to make a lot of choices regarding your own borders and you almost immediately come close to what you yourself think as decent or not. Or what you think of as erotic, attractive and exiting. We had a lot of discussion about this internally as you can imagine. Basically we want our games to be sexy and explicit but not raunchy. An other thing we always have in mind is that the players of our adult games must have a good esthetic experience, not an embarrassing one. Kinky, and with imagination created sexscenes, sometimes a little lighthearted or subtile and sometimes with a little fetishism to spice things up. Just like The Art of Love, AOL is reflecting our ideas and gives a good example of what we feel is exciting, remarkable and beautiful when it comes to sexual images. We reflect to it and it is our inspiration in developing our adult games.

Sex in games

Sometime ago we were contacted by an author of the Washington Post about the topic ‘sex in games’. What did we think about the future of sexuality displayed in adult games. And about nudity in games in general. Well we think that the first thing that should be taken in to consideration is that there is nothing wrong with ‘sex’ and ‘nudity’ in games as long as it is only accessible to adults. If they like it and want to play it why not? There is nothing harmful or indecent in playing an adult computer game. It’s the same with watching an erotic movie or looking at erotic images. Nobody gets hurt, it just innocent entertainment. We also stated that why all the fuss about sex in games when we seem to find violence in games normal. If there is any influence of games on peoples minds, and I really doubt that anyway, sexual fantasy’s and explicit sex in games would be a far better inspiration than one person shooting of some characters head.

The future of adult games

Well I discussed this topic a while ago. But I think that with the improvement of computer generated humans and animations the future looks bright :-). On the other hand I do think that it will remain the domain of smaller game studio’s. The larger game companies like Electronic Arts will not burn their hand on Adult games because they mainly create games for kids and and a young adult audience. An other thing that will make the distribution of adult games easier is the Internet. People get used to the Internet as an normal channel to buy things, especially when it comes to purchasing things of an adult nature.
