Although I’m not a minimalist, I love longwinded stories and endless layers in art, I often appreciate it when an artists is limiting himself in his artistic concept. I guess modernistic ideas like “limitations are revealing the master” or “a pure focus on form” are still vital when an artist is capable of renewal and refinement of his ideas. Things I surely experience in the erotic photography of Charles Letbetter.
Charles Letbetter founded ‘Art Amoureux’, together with his model Amia Novoa. The ‘Art Amoureux’ project is showing interesting formal nudes in the ‘Spot of Color’ galleries, like the composition with nude and bottle, or nude with globe. Most images are in black and white with one or more objects colored.
There are also some rather kinky images in there, like the one with a measuring tape on a pierced vagina, or the playing woman with orange blouse in the gallery. But even when he photographs these more engaging subjects he continues to work formal, concentrating on light and composition.
The model is responsible for the sexual, or erotic, feeling of the images, not the photographer. I guess the fact they are both equally present as founders of the project says enough, they are quite complementary and the result of their cooperation are some marvelous erotic images.
