The nude dance is one of the favorite subjects of the photographer Bryon Paul McCartney, in this series the Italian dancer Giulia is performing her weightless dance. Although some of his other work is drenched with eroticism, the dancing nudes clearly are different in nature. They are more about the expression of the body, the focus of the dancer and the incredible movements of the dance itself.
McCartney about the nude dance
“It is important to understand that the nudity in these images is not overt or done for prurient purposes. Instead, when the dancer is nude, you can see more details of the muscles and, in my opinion, have a more intimate connection with the images.”
But it’s surely not the dance, or dancer, alone that makes these images so interesting. The registration of the movement, excellently visualized by the cloth she uses, and the sharp compositions are equally responsible for the visual strength in these photographs. These ‘Nude dance’ series are part of a growing collection of images for a book McCartney is working on, I will keep you posted when it’s finished.
