Six Questions: Paul .j. Churchman

1) How would you personally describe the nature of your art?
I would describe the nature of my art as erotically modern fine art. A hectic mix of the traditional forms of composition blended with modern artistic expression.
2) What artists, art periods, are an inspiration for your own work? And in what way?
The early part of my development as a photographer looking at the nude was Jeff Dunas, his work is superb, construction and composition are so stylized, his work is modern but blends all the elements of fashion photography with fine art nude.

Sadly one of my modern day inspirations recently passed away, Bob Carlos Clarke for me one of the great innovators of the visual nude, his attention to details and getting every element of the image correct outlined his true dedication to this medium.

3) Where are your ideas coming from? Does your work reflect your own erotic fantasies & desires?
My ideas come from all that’s around me, for instance one of the most popular images I have constructed in recent times has been ” chopper girl ” it has sold all around the world, how many of us as teenagers fantasized about a beautiful woman sitting on our 70’s chopper bikes!

4) What you biggest artistic frustration? Or main struggle in your creation process?
Biggest frustration, apart from finding locations, I would have to say knowing when to stop, it can become an addiction knowing when to leave a piece of artwork alone, creating something stunning is one thing, knowing when to walk away is something completely different.

5) Is it easy to find places to display your work? ( galleries, museums or shows )
I guess I am fortunate at the moment in that I’m actively seeking galleries in the US to promote my work, I have already agreed for International Illustrator to showcase my work in several of their galleries. My work has also featured in galleries on Rodeo Drive and in New York. I have found that many of the galleries in the UK have reservations about showing nude or erotic imagery, we have a very politically correct society now and freedom of expression is welcomed it has to be the right kind of expression.

6) Can you provide a link to a website that you consider a must, a great place to visit?
One of the best sites on the net for showcasing a variety of artistic talent is the Guild of Erotic Artists of which I am a member, there is some amazing talent on display and it makes getting in touch with the artists so easy, after all art should be accessible to all. Site address is www.theguildoferoticartists.co.uk
