An interview with erotic photographer Justice Howard, about her work and inspiration. Along with the interview there’s a gallery with some amazing new work, Images that are never published before.
How would you personally describe the nature of your art?
It’s very progressive “eye candy” for the discriminating adult viewer. I think that about encapsulates it.
What artist, art periods, are an inspiration for your own work? And in what way?
Well I like Helmut Newton a lot, because his stuff is very classy yet ultra sexy. I love his usage of Black & White and how it really just grabs your eye. I also like Weegee, and I own an original self-portrait signed by him, which I love. What i like about his work is how he lit, with that “deer in the headlights” very stark kind of lighting.
Where are your ideas coming form? Does your work reflect your own erotic fantasies and desires?
All of my ideas come from my brain pan. And one of the things that my art reflects about me is that I’m not a big fan of porn, and I don’t think that art has to go that far to be erotic. I have shots where the model is totally clothed and you still get the idea I’m trying to portray.
What is your biggest artistic frustration? Or what’s your main struggle in the creation process?
I find that I sometimes need some really high-end locations, and getting to shoot in those places without paying huge location fees, is sometimes a problem. So I’d say not having huge budgets for great locations is a set back for me. If I’m shooting it just “for arts sake”, and not for a paying client, I usually don’t have a location budget to speak of.
Is it easy to find places to display your work? Or is erotic or sexual themed art still somewhat taboo in your country?
No, theres a huge interest in my work right now. As matter of fact a bar in Washington DC just bought 8 of my pieces to hang and actually “be the bar” so thats pretty sweet. Plus my book is in design right now, so that will be coming down the pike shortly too. I’m involved in 5 art shows now, one in LA, one in Atlanta, one in Amsterdam, etc etc. ad infinitum.
Can you provide a link to a website you often visit?
One is www.issue-one.com and its a very high-end art site, thats also a full blown hard copy mag, sold in Borders books and Barnes and Noble. Beautiful stuff. I’ll have a double page spread in the next issue, plus 3 additional pages. Another one is www.fotographicmagazine.com and its a new mag, soon to be a hard copy magazine in a few months. Both of these are really nice high-end art sites with good graphics. Visitors should also go to justicehoward.com to see more of my art if they so desire. Ciao bella art lovers! : justice howard
